Salesforce’s stake in Anthropic is worth about US$5 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. The software company initially invested about US$50 million in the AI startup in early 2023 and later participated in additional funding rounds.

Anthropic said on Monday it had confidentially filed draft paperwork for an initial public offering (IPO).

The process lets companies begin a private review by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, and draft disclosures generally need to be made public at least 15 days before a roadshow.

Salesforce has said Anthropic’s models help power AI features in its software, including Slack.

Anthropic is also among the partners that can build agents directly in Slack.

In a filing, Salesforce said its strategic investment portfolio was worth US$7.8 billion on April 30, before Anthropic’s latest round.

Quarterly results showed US$558 million in net gains on strategic investments, a non-cash valuation change that added US$0.49 to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) diluted earnings per share.
