Salesforce reportedly cuts under 1,000 jobs

Salesforce reportedly laid off fewer than 1,000 employees earlier this month, according to Business Insider, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The affected roles included marketing, product management, data analytics, and the company’s Agentforce AI product, based on LinkedIn posts and conversations with employees.

Salesforce did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Reuters could not independently verify the report.

The company has not publicly disclosed the layoffs.

The start of 2026 has seen several US tech firms, including Amazon, which announced it was cutting 16,000 roles worldwide in January amid increased adoption of AI tools.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff previously mentioned reducing 4,000 customer support roles in August last year, citing a need for fewer staff due to AI advancements.

Salesforce is scheduled to report its Q4 results on February 25.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

These layoffs contrast with Salesforce’s recent strong financial performance

  • Salesforce reported laying off fewer than 1,000 employees, yet its latest earnings materials described solid results. The company posted $10.26 billion in quarterly revenue and a 35.5% non-GAAP operating margin 1.
  • New AI products including Agentforce have been a growing source of recurring sales. Agentforce and Data 360 reached nearly $1.4 billion in annual recurring revenue, up 114% year over year 2.
  • Salesforce presented the changes as shifting people and spending across teams. On the Q3 FY2026 earnings call, the company said sales capacity was up 23% 3.
  • Reuters reported a similar approach in early 2025, with Salesforce cutting jobs while also hiring staff to sell new AI products 4.

AI supports growth for AI vendors and disruption elsewhere

  • Reported cuts at Salesforce covered marketing, product management, data analytics, and work tied to Agentforce. The mix hints at uneven effects across roles.
  • Reuters reported in early 2025 that Salesforce reduced headcount while hiring for AI sales 4. CEO Marc Benioff said on the Q3 FY2026 earnings call that Salesforce expected about 15,000 account executives, meaning salespeople who manage customer relationships and close deals, and he discussed AI-led product momentum 3.
  • Digital media has faced different pressure. Reuters reported that Business Insider planned to lay off about 21% of its workforce, and cited CEO Barbara Peng saying the outlet was grappling with shrinking search traffic 5. (Claims that the layoffs were driven by an “AI-related decline in revenue” are not in the Reuters report.)
  • The pattern fits a wider shift. Some companies that build and sell AI tools grow in selected areas, while others shrink as traffic and advertising models change.
