S Korean retail investors sell $657m Tesla, shift to crypto
South Korean retail investors sold a net US$657 million of Tesla shares in August, marking the largest monthly outflow since early 2023, according to Bloomberg calculations using depository data.
The shift comes as local investors show increased interest in cryptocurrencies.
Bitmine Immersion Technologies, viewed as a proxy for ether, attracted US$253 million in net inflows during the same period.
Despite the sell-off, Korean investors still hold US$21.9 billion worth of Tesla stock, keeping it as their top foreign holding ahead of Nvidia and Palantir.
The exchange-traded fund TSLL, providing double-leveraged exposure to Tesla, also recorded its highest monthly outflow since early 2024, losing US$554 million.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Korean retail investors drive dramatic sector rotation from tech to crypto
South Korean retail investors are orchestrating a massive capital reallocation that extends far beyond Tesla, demonstrating their growing influence as a global market force.
The numbers reveal the scale of this shift: crypto-linked stocks now represent 31.5% of Korean overseas portfolios, up from just 8.5% in January 20251. Meanwhile, net purchases of U.S. Big Tech stocks plummeted to $260 million in July from an average of $1.68 billion earlier in the year1.
Korean investors poured $259 million into BitMine alone in July, making it their top overseas purchase2. The total flow into U.S. crypto-related stocks reached over $12 billion in 20253.
The speed and magnitude of this reallocation show how concentrated retail investor bases can create significant market movements when they shift preferences simultaneously.
2️⃣ Regulatory clarity accelerates institutional-quality crypto exposure through equities
Korean investors are choosing crypto-linked stocks over direct cryptocurrency investments, revealing a preference for regulated exposure to digital assets.
The U.S. GENIUS Act, which provides a regulatory framework for stablecoin issuance, has contributed to Korean investors’ confidence in these hybrid crypto-equity models1. This regulatory development allows investors to gain crypto exposure through traditional stock market mechanisms.
BitMine’s 193% surge in July demonstrates how these stocks can deliver cryptocurrency-like returns while operating within established securities frameworks4. Korean investors are using regulated equities as a bridge to access crypto markets that may face more restrictive regulations domestically.
