S Korean chip supplier Hanmi invests $32.5m in SpaceX
Hanmi Semiconductor, a South Korean chip equipment maker, said it plans to invest 50 billion won (US$32.5 million) in SpaceX.
The company said it sees AI demand expanding from semiconductors and data centers into satellite communications and aerospace. It did not disclose the size of the stake. No commercial partnership or supply agreement with SpaceX was announced.
Hanmi is already exposed to AI chip spending through making thermocompression bonders. It said are essential for high-bandwidth memory packaging used in AI semiconductors.
The planned 50 billion won (US$32.5 million) purchase equals 7.24% of Hanmi’s equity capital.
Industry reports also suggest AI is driving satellite communications upgrades such as network management and beam steering.
The space semiconductor market is projected to grow through 2035.
