🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The rebound story overlooks unresolved multi-billion won regulatory risks
- The projected profit rebound must be weighed against unresolved oversight costs tied to security breaches and data leaks across the sector, including incidents involving SK Telecom and KT.
- A record ₩134.791 billion fine from the Personal Information Protection Commission, Korea’s privacy regulator, is being legally challenged by SK Telecom, so the final penalty has not been set 1.
- Penalties linked to KT’s data breach have not yet been determined, so related costs are expected to be booked in future earnings 2.
- Until those cases are settled, a large part of the financial risk remains outside the recovery story.
The pivot to AI creates a multi-trillion won opening for infrastructure suppliers
- Infrastructure vendors and systems integrators can treat telecom companies’ move into AI as a multi-trillion won demand wave.
- Collectively, the three firms are expected to spend ₩6.6 trillion to ₩8 trillion on 2026 capital expenditures, with attention on AI data centers 3.
- Projects such as SK Telecom’s new sites in Ulsan and Guro, plus KT’s plan to reach more than 500MW of capacity, set up long-term orders for high-performance computing, networking, and cooling gear 2.
- That reallocation from legacy network buildouts to AI facilities creates a longer growth path for specialist suppliers and their investors.
