S Korea keeps DeepSeek ban over data concerns

South Korea has not established a timeline for resuming the DeepSeek AI app from China. The suspension occurred last month due to concerns regarding data management practices, according to a senior official on Mar. 27, 2025.

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) halted new downloads of DeepSeek on Feb. 15, 2025.

The commission cited issues related to data collection that violated South Korea’s personal information protection laws. The suspension will remain until the service complies with local regulations.

DeepSeek has expressed its intention to comply with South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act.

PIPC Chairperson Ko Hak-soo noted during a press conference that the company acknowledged shortcomings in adhering to local laws.
