Russia’s Roblox ban triggers public protest
Dozens of people gathered in Tomsk, Siberia, on December 14 to protest Russia’s ban on Roblox, the US-based gaming platform.
The demonstration, held in Vladimir Vysotsky Park, included participants holding signs such as “Hands off Roblox,” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain.”
Russian regulator Roskomnadzor blocked Roblox on December 3, citing content it said could harm the spiritual and moral development of children.
The move has sparked debate in Russia over censorship, digital child safety, and the effectiveness of bans given the widespread use of VPNs to bypass restrictions.
Some parents and teachers in Russia have raised concerns about inappropriate content and online interactions on Roblox.
Roblox, headquartered in California, has also been banned in countries like Iraq and Turkey over similar concerns.
Russian officials have said that internet censorship is necessary to counter what they describe as Western information campaigns and cultural influence.
