A Moscow court has fined Google 8 billion roubles (around US$77.9 million) for failing to comply with previous penalty orders.

The Chertanovo District Court announced the decision on January 14 but did not specify the reasons behind the fine.

Russia has increasingly pressured foreign tech firms to remove content deemed illegal, with fines typically around 4 million roubles (around US$38,948).

Google has not commented on the ruling. Its platform YouTube, previously popular in Russia with 50 million daily users, has seen usage drop to 12 million.

Russian authorities are accused of slowing YouTube’s download speeds to restrict opposition content—a claim they deny, attributing issues to outdated Google equipment.
