🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Smart glasses market entering mainstream adoption after decades of development

Rokid’s 250,000 pre-orders signal a significant shift in the AR glasses market, which has been developing since the 1960s when Ivan Sutherland created the first head-mounted display1.

While early AR products like Google Glass struggled with mainstream acceptance, the market is now projected to grow from $878.8 million in 2024 to $4.1 billion by 2030, representing a 29.4% CAGR2.

This adoption curve mirrors other technologies that required time to overcome both technical and social barriers. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses achieved over 1 million units sold in 2024, demonstrating that stylish, lightweight designs can finally overcome consumer hesitation3.

Rokid’s approach of creating glasses that weigh just 49 grams and resemble ordinary eyewear directly addresses historical adoption barriers, where bulky, conspicuous designs limited consumer interest despite technological capabilities.

The 2,499 yuan ($345) price point positions these glasses in the mid-range consumer market rather than the enterprise sector where most AR headsets have found their primary audience.

2️⃣ AI integration transforming smart glasses from passive displays to intelligent assistants

Rokid’s integration of “multiple AI large models” reflects a fundamental shift in the smart glasses industry from purely visual AR displays to AI-powered wearable assistants4.

Early AR glasses focused primarily on display capabilities, but modern smart glasses increasingly incorporate AI for contextual awareness, real-time information processing, and personalized experiences, features that dramatically expand their practical utility5.

The success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, considered the first true AI smart glasses, demonstrated how AI integration could drive consumer adoption, helping Meta capture over 60% of the smart glasses market in 20246.
