Firefly backlog climbs while cash burn stays high
- Backlog rose to about $1.3 billion from $1.1 billion in Q2 2025 1, helped by NASA’s $176.7 million Blue Ghost Mission 4 award and other wins 2. Backlog is the value of signed contracts not yet recognized as revenue.
- Cash and equivalents were $996 million on September 30, 2025 1. Q3 free cash flow was negative $62 million due to Blue Ghost prepayments and Eclipse development spending (Eclipse is an in-space transportation platform Firefly is developing) 1.
- Q3 net loss reached $133.4 million with operating expenses of $70.7 million 1. The balance gives runway yet losses plus the $855 million SciTec deal funded in part by a $260 million revolving credit facility (a flexible line of credit from lenders) 1 lift financing needs as operations scale.
NASA south pole rover deal opens slots for niche suppliers
- A $176.7 million NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services award sends two rovers and three instruments to the Moon’s south pole in 2029 3. Payloads include MoonRanger (a lightweight autonomous rover) and a Canadian Space Agency rover 4. Instruments include a Laser Ablation Ionization Mass Spectrometer, a Laser Retroreflector Array, and Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume Surface Studies 4.
- Vendors in robotics software or thermal control can pursue subcontract roles. The same applies to radiation shielding or autonomous navigation, plus sensor calibration. Companies in data analytics or AI mineral detection or environmental monitoring should track procurement 4. Targets include hydrogen, water, and minerals 4. Canadian Space Agency and University of Bern participation opens international teaming 4.
