Roblox launches age-based accounts first in Indonesia
Roblox has launched age-based accounts in Indonesia for users under 16.
Indonesia is the first market for the system as the company tightens access to games and chat through age verification and curated content.
The new setup places users aged 5 to 12 into Roblox Kids and those aged 13 to 15 into Roblox Select.
Unverified users can only access “Minimal” and “Mild” content and cannot use chat.
Roblox Kids users can only play approved games rated “Minimal” or “Mild” and have communication turned off by default.
Roblox Select users can access some “Moderate” games and use limited chat with trusted friends after parental approval.
The rollout follows Roblox’s face-based age checks for chat introduced in December.
Roblox has also been working with Indonesian regulators on child safety and compliance efforts.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Roblox tightened safeguards after Indonesia passed PP Tunas
- Indonesia’s child safety rule, PP Tunas, led Roblox to tighten rules for users under 16. Officials also labeled Roblox the only “high-risk” gaming platform 1.
- The rollout carries a steep cost. Roblox lowered its 2026 bookings forecast by about US$1 billion, citing slower new user growth and less communication after age checks expanded 2.
- Stricter limits, including narrower chat access for some younger users, helped drive an 18% fall in Roblox shares after the Q1 earnings report 2.
Indonesia’s approach may shape how platforms control access
- Indonesia has also pushed other large platforms to comply with its under-16 rules 1. The list includes YouTube; TikTok; Facebook; Instagram; Threads; X; and Bigo Live, a livestreaming social app 1.
- Researchers warn that bans aimed at safety can send children to services with weaker oversight. Australia saw that pattern after similar laws took effect 3.
- Some critics say these rules miss how the internet functions as a social hub for children in dense cities with few safe public spaces for them 3.
- Tech companies now face a world where regional laws decide who gets access, with age and identity checks taking a larger role than content policing 1.
