Roblox to comply with Russian laws after child safety ban

Roblox said it is prepared to modify its platform in Russia to meet legal requirements after being banned by Russian authorities on December 3, 2025 over child safety concerns.

The US gaming platform said it is ready to temporarily limit communication features and revise content moderation processes in Russia to restore access for users.

Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, confirmed that Roblox had reached out and expressed willingness to comply with local laws.

Russian officials cited child safety as the reason for the ban, which has led to rare public protests and frustration among users.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Russia’s Roblox ban adds to a global crackdown

  • Russia banned Roblox, joining Turkey; Algeria; Saudi Arabia; Kuwait; Qatar; and Oman 1.
  • A department within Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (the national police) named Roblox the platform with the most recorded crimes in 2024. Complaints on scams and content violations continued into early 2025 1.
  • The Guardian exposé on exploitation and harassment on Roblox spurred conservative activists and deputies to seek a ban 1.
  • Texas attorney general Ken Paxton (the state’s top law enforcement official) sued Roblox for allegedly ignoring safety laws and misleading parents 2.
  • Australia’s under-16 social media ban took effect December 10, 2025. Platforms face fines up to $49.5 million. Malaysia plans similar limits from 2026 3.

User-generated content (UGC) and gaming platforms can sell plug-in tools for local rules

  • Malaysia requires electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) in January 2026, Brazil requires parental linking for under-16s in March 2026, plus UK accepts facial age estimation plus digital ID checks 43.
  • Safety vendors can build plug-in systems with country toggles for age checks plus chat limits, while platforms add filters and parental controls per market.
  • Veriff, an identity verification provider, offers AI age checks with passive liveness detection (a background check that confirms a real person is present rather than a photo or video) to block spoofing. That signals demand for fraud-resistant verification with low friction 3.
  • For business-to-business (B2B) software vendors serving gaming and social platforms, mapping 2025 rules helps plan features and timing across markets with different enforcement dates plus technical specs.
