Robinhood to enter Indonesia with crypto trader, broker acquisition

Robinhood will acquire Indonesia-based brokerage PT Buana Capital Sekuritas and licensed cryptocurrency trader PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, marking its entry into the Indonesian market.

Indonesia has over 19 million capital market investors and 17 million cryptocurrency traders, making it a key growth area for global trading platforms.

The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Robinhood said the acquisition is expected to close in H1 2026.

Pieter Tanuri, the majority owner of both Indonesian firms, will become a strategic adviser to Robinhood.

Acquiring a brokerage and a licensed digital asset trader will help Robinhood meet local regulations and expand its product offerings in Indonesia.

Robinhood joined the S&P 500 index in 2025, and also announced its move into prediction markets earlier this year.

Robinhood’s shares have risen nearly 268% in 2025, as of December 4.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Robinhood’s Indonesian entry hinges on foreign ownership limits and approvals from Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK)

  • Rules let a foreign legal entity engaged in securities and licensed in its home jurisdiction own up to 99% of a joint venture securities firm, while a foreign entity in finance other than securities is capped at 85%, which could shape how Robinhood sets control of Buana Capital Sekuritas 1.
  • Closing by H1 2026 needs OJK approval for the brokerage license and crypto asset business 1. Indonesia shifted crypto oversight from Bappebti (the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency) to OJK in January 2025. Approval timing will define the product lineup, with margin and derivatives bound by local rules.
  • With crypto oversight under OJK, custody and reporting may require local setups or partners 1. Robinhood may need to align its offers with OJK’s evolving digital asset rules.

Fintech vendors with Dukcapil-integrated electronic know-your-customer (e-KYC) and payment integrations will capture Indonesian customer acquisition spend

  • Robinhood’s entry raises competition with Ajaib and Pluang 2. Faster onboarding will lift demand for Dukcapil (Indonesia’s Population and Civil Registration Agency) linked e-KYC that fits Indonesia’s plan for an identity verification and e-KYC platform.
  • Apps that pre-integrate Bank Indonesia Fast Payment (BI-FAST) real-time payments with e-wallets like DANA will grab budgets, as easy funding matters when 19 million investors compare onboarding friction.
  • Vendors approved by OJK that offer plug-and-play compliance modules can charge more as brokerages push campaigns before H1 2026. Modules cover anti-money laundering checks with transaction monitoring.
