Robinhood backs OpenAI with $75m investment

Robinhood, a US trading platform, said on April 22 that its venture fund invested US$75 million in OpenAI as it seeks to give retail investors access to private technology companies.

OpenAI has attracted strong investor interest as businesses and startups rush to build AI tools.

Robinhood Ventures Fund I launched in March to offer private market exposure.

The investment also points to warmer ties after OpenAI said in 2025 that it had not partnered with Robinhood or endorsed its planned blockchain-based stock tokens linked to OpenAI and SpaceX.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Robinhood’s fund offers a regulated path into private markets after 2025 token questions

  • Robinhood Ventures Fund I (RVI) is a closed-end fund. Robinhood says it plans an initial public offering (IPO) in the coming weeks on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the symbol RVI. That would let retail investors buy and sell shares without being accredited investors 1.
  • The fund says its US$75 million investment is in OpenAI common stock 2. That differs from Robinhood’s 2025 European Stock Tokens tied to private companies such as OpenAI and SpaceX, Elon Musk’s private rocket and satellite company 3.
  • OpenAI said those tokens were not equity. It also said it did not partner with Robinhood, did not endorse the product, and had not approved any transfer of its equity 4.
  • Robinhood said the European Union (EU) product gave indirect exposure through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), a legal entity set up to hold assets 3. Lithuania’s central bank, Robinhood’s lead EU regulator, examined the product 3. Robinhood says RVI uses a listed fund structure to widen retail access to private markets 1.

Fewer public companies are driving new retail paths to private firms

  • Robinhood frames the fund as a response to a long market shift. Its materials say the number of publicly traded U.S. companies fell from about 7,000 in 2000 to about 4,000 in 2024 1.
  • The same materials put the value of U.S. private firms above US$10 trillion 1. Robinhood says more market value now sits outside public exchanges 1.
  • A listed closed-end fund can bundle private-company holdings into something investors can trade through standard brokerage accounts 5. That gives retail investors a route to less-liquid assets 5.
  • If the structure works, wealth managers may build similar products 6. The fund’s share price could also pull private-company valuations into daily market swings 6.
