Ripple resolves SEC lawsuit, ending four-year dispute
Ripple and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have agreed to end their four-year legal dispute, as announced by Ripple’s chief legal officer Stuart Alderoty on Mar. 25.
Under the agreement, Ripple will withdraw its cross-appeal. The SEC will keep US$50 million of the previously imposed US$125 million fine.
The remaining balance will be returned to Ripple, and the SEC has requested the court to lift the current injunction. This agreement requires a formal commission vote, legal documentation, and court procedures before finalization.
The legal battle began in December 2020 when the SEC accused Ripple of conducting an unregistered securities offering through sales of its XRP cryptocurrency. The case has been significant in assessing the application of US securities laws to digital assets.
