Ripple adds Coinbase crypto futures to Prime platform
Ripple said its Prime clearing platform now offers institutional clients access to the full range of cryptocurrency futures listed on Coinbase Derivatives.
These contracts are cleared through Nodal Clear and trade in a regulated U.S. market overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Ripple Prime said it cleared more than US$3.0 trillion in trading volume in 2025 and offers access to both standard and smaller “nano” contracts listed on Coinbase, such as nano Bitcoin and nano ether, which are designed to lower capital needs.
Ripple said all contracts are cleared through Nodal Clear and are available for trading around the clock for institutional clients.
The service builds on Hidden Road, a futures commission merchant and prime broker Ripple acquired in 2025 for US$1.3 billion that now operates as Ripple Prime.
Ripple has also bought stablecoin payments firm Rail for US$200 million and acquired treasury technology provider GTreasury and wallet infrastructure startup Palisade as it expands institutional offerings.
Many large trading firms prefer futures because they allow exposure or hedging without holding tokens, and U.S.-regulated markets provide clearer rules and centralized clearing.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Ripple’s acquisitions target crypto services banks avoid
- Ripple followed its $1.3 billion purchase of prime broker Hidden Road, now rebranded as Ripple Prime 1.
- Many traditional banks stay away from full crypto prime brokerage because rules remain unclear and prices swing fast, which leaves demand unmet 1.
- These buyouts help Ripple line up institutional basics such as clearing, financing, and custody, which hedge funds need for high-volume trading 1.
- The approach puts Ripple up against crypto-native unicorns already serving institutions, including FalconX with more than 600 institutional clients and an $8 billion valuation 1.
Integration focuses on financial plumbing
- The partnership matters because it routes crypto derivatives through the regulated pipes used across traditional finance.
- A Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)-regulated clearinghouse such as Nodal Clear stands between buyers and sellers, which cuts counterparty risk that keeps many institutions on the sidelines 2.
- Crypto futures, including contracts listed on Coinbase Derivatives, can then sit inside existing risk management frameworks as another asset class 3.
- This path to wider adoption relies on fitting digital assets into familiar market infrastructure that firms already trust.
