FWD Group Holdings Ltd., founded by billionaire Richard Li, experienced a decline of up to 2.5% in its share price during its trading debut in Hong Kong on July 7, 2025.
The company raised HK$3.5 billion (US$442 million) through its initial public offering (IPO), selling 91.3 million shares priced at HK$38 (US$4.86) each.
The IPO values FWD Group at over US$6 billion. Cornerstone investors include Mubadala Capital and Japan’s T&D Holdings Inc.
The debut follows previous attempts to go public in New York in 2021, which were abandoned due to regulatory concerns.
Richard Li holds a 66.5% stake in FWD through corporate entities and founded the company in 2013.
At the IPO price, his stake is valued at two-thirds of his US$6.1 billion net worth, according to Bloomberg.
The company intends to use the IPO proceeds to reduce debt, support growth, and enhance its digital operations.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ FWD’s IPO timing coincides with Hong Kong’s historic market resurgence
Richard Li’s decision to list FWD now follows multiple failed attempts and coincides with Hong Kong’s dramatic IPO market recovery in 2025.
The timing is strategic, as Hong Kong’s IPO market has raised HKD 107.1 billion in the first half of 2025, a sevenfold increase compared to the same period in 20241.
This surge has positioned Hong Kong as the world’s top IPO destination, surpassing both Nasdaq and NYSE for the first time in several years2.
The market’s renewed strength is driven by improved liquidity, supportive government policies, and the return of international investors, creating a more favorable environment for companies seeking public listings3.
FWD’s offering comes amid particular strength in the insurance sector, with major insurers like AIA and Prudential seeing their shares rise at least 35% since April lows.
2️⃣ FWD’s pan-Asian expansion strategy reflects regional insurance market dynamics
