Researchers question DeepSeek’s long-text AI method

Researchers from Japan’s Tohoku University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have questioned a method introduced by Chinese AI startup DeepSeek aimed at improving AI’s ability to process long texts.

The DeepSeek-OCR technique, announced in October, uses visual perception to compress large documents, claiming to significantly reduce token counts.

However, the study found that the method’s performance relied heavily on language patterns rather than visual understanding, leading to inconsistent results.

Experiments showed the accuracy of visual question answering dropped to around 20% when additional text was introduced, compared to over 90% for standard models.

The researchers suggest that current optical compression approaches may not be a reliable solution for overcoming AI’s long-context limitations.

DeepSeek did not respond to requests for comment. Some experts view the technique as having both potential advantages and limitations, depending on the use case.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Key details are needed to validate claims about DeepSeek-OCR’s flaws

  • The real-world impact of DeepSeek-OCR’s reliance on language priors (an AI model’s tendency to lean on patterns learned from large volumes of text) needs to be measured on a standardized task set, since single-task results are often a “weak proxy for overall long-context capability” 1.
  • Broader benchmarks like MMLongBench are used to test long-document visual question answering (VQA), summarization, plus visual retrieval-augmented generation (VRAG), giving a wider read on long-context performance 1.
  • It should be clarified whether the reported ~20% VQA accuracy in the researchers’ experiments, when extra text was added to steer the model’s reasoning, was tied to that setup or to the method itself.
  • To confirm the findings, the researchers’ exact experimental setup and the DeepSeek-OCR method should be released for outside replication.

The debate over AI metrics creates an opening for independent evaluation services

  • Enterprise AI teams, tech operators, investors may want more outside audits plus red-team testing for complex AI models.
  • The researchers say company-reported metrics can be “misleading,” leaving customers unsure when they compare long-context solutions.
  • A startup could offer a testing platform built on open benchmarks like MMLongBench, which flags bottlenecks in cross-modality retrieval (finding and using relevant information across text and images) plus the “lost in the middle” phenomenon where models miss information in the middle of long inputs 1.
  • That kind of service could add confidence by giving neutral checks, since models like GPT-4o still struggle on these hard benchmarks 1.
