Reliance reworks Jio IPO as fresh share sale
Reliance Industries is reworking the planned India IPO of Jio Platforms as a sale of only new shares.
The move follow investors discussions over valuation and concerns about listing-day losses.
Jio Platforms is Reliance’s telecom and digital unit in India.
A fully fresh issue would send proceeds to Jio and dilute existing holders, and about 250 billion rupees (US$2.65 billion) could go to debt repayment.
Jio may file its draft prospectus within one to two weeks and list in July after Reliance began preparations in March and appointed up to 19 banks to manage the issue.
The listing would be the first by a major Reliance unit in nearly two decades.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The IPO shifts from investor sales to company fundraising
- Selling only new shares would reshape the IPO from the earlier Offer for Sale (OFS), where existing investors sell stock to the public 1.
- The OFS would have let early backers from 2020, including Meta and Google, trim their holdings after the usual four-year private equity holding period ended 2.
- Under that structure, early shareholders were set to sell about 8% of their own stakes, while Jio Platforms would collect none of the proceeds 3.
Reliance favors market stability over a high valuation
- Reliance seems to have taken lessons from recent large Indian listings 4.
- Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s state-backed life insurer, later traded below its issue price after steep pricing. Paytm, the digital payments company, did the same 4.
- A fresh issue priced more cautiously could support steadier trading after listing and build investor trust over time 4.
- The shift would also bring in 250 billion rupees (US$2.65 billion) for debt repayment, leaving more room for future expansion including the group’s pledged US$110 billion investment in AI infrastructure 1.
