Reliance Jio in talks to sell 8% stake in IPO: sources

Reliance Jio Platforms, controlled by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has held talks with 13 foreign investors about selling around 8% of each investor’s stake in a planned Mumbai IPO, sources familiar with the discussions said.

The telecoms-to-AI firm is preparing to seek approval for the listing as early as this week, the sources said.

Investors include Meta, Google, Vista Equity Partners, KKR, and Gulf sovereign funds, including the Public Investment Fund, Mubadala, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

The IPO is expected to be structured as an offer-for-sale, meaning existing shareholders sell shares, and the company does not raise new capital.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

A large IPO enabled by a small rule tweak

  • The listing comes after a 2020 fundraising sprint when 13 investors, including Google and Meta, bought a combined 33% stake for more than $20.5 billion 1.
  • Back then, backing from firms such as KKR priced Jio Platforms at about $65 billion, well below its current target valuation 2.
  • The plan to sell roughly 2.5% of total shares relies on a proposed update to India’s IPO rules from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), India’s markets regulator. The update would let mega-IPOs list with a smaller public float, though it still needs government action before it takes effect 3.

Investors cash out while partnerships stay in place

  • This IPO is an offer-for-sale, so cash goes to shareholders who sell rather than to Jio Platforms for new investment.
  • The sale lets investors like Google and Meta take gains while keeping close ties with Reliance beyond equity stakes, including work across digital services, cloud and devices 3.
  • A public listing would set a market price for Jio Platforms, which runs India’s largest mobile network operator. The operator shook up the telecom market with low-cost data plans 2.
