Reliance Jio IPO said to be delayed, initially planned for 2025
Reliance Jio Platforms has postponed its initial public offering (IPO) that was expected this year, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The company, valued at over US$100 billion, plans to boost revenues and subscriber numbers before proceeding.
No bankers have been appointed yet for the listing.
Jio’s telecom business, which contributes nearly 80% of its US$17.6 billion in annual revenue, has over 488 million subscribers and is back to growth despite tariff hike challenges.
In 2019, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani said Jio would be listed within five years. Reports in 2024 pointed to a 2025 IPO, expected to be among India’s largest.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Reliance’s strategic patience mirrors its historic value creation approach
Jio’s IPO delay reflects Ambani’s consistent pattern of prioritizing long-term value creation over immediate market opportunities.
Since Reliance Industries’ original 1977 listing, the company has transformed a Rs 10,000 investment into Rs 3.1 crore by 2019, a 31,000% return, by focusing on strategic growth rather than short-term gains 1.
This methodical approach to business development has previously paid off with Reliance becoming India’s first company to reach Rs 10 trillion market capitalization in 2019, creating a significant gap between itself and competitors 2.
The delayed IPO suggests Ambani is applying this same proven philosophy to Jio, preferring to maximize the company’s potential valuation beyond the current analyst estimates of $100-136 billion rather than rushing to market 3.
Jio’s evolution from concept (initially seeded by Isha Ambani in 2011) to market leader with 488 million subscribers demonstrates how Reliance consistently takes a patient, strategic approach to business development 4.
2️⃣ India’s volatile IPO landscape impacts listing decisions
Jio’s IPO delay comes amid broader market volatility affecting India’s IPO landscape, with many companies reconsidering their public listing timelines.
While India had its best-ever IPO year in 2024, raising $20.5 billion, recent months have seen a significant slowdown with fewer companies filing for IPOs due to geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties 5.
