Reliance Industries to invest $110b in India AI infrastructure

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, plans to invest up to 10 trillion rupees (US$110 billion) in AI infrastructure over seven years, according to his announcement at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

The investment will be made by Reliance and its telecom unit, Reliance Jio Infocomm.

India is hosting one of its largest AI conferences this week, attracting industry leaders such as Google’s Sundar Pichai and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.

The country aims to draw more than US$200 billion in AI-related investments over the next two years.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

India’s AI push leans on a safer energy plan

  • Big spending targets AI capacity while also pairing new data centers with renewable power projects 1.
  • This approach lowers risk for large upfront costs. If AI computing demand cools, generated electricity can still be sold to the grid, which supports returns 1.
  • Adani Group ties its data center plans to a 30-gigawatt renewable energy park at Khavda in Gujarat, with more than 10 GW already running 2.
  • Owned power supply can reduce waits for grid connections that have slowed data center construction in Western markets, which can speed delivery 1.

India wants to be an AI infrastructure buildout hub, moving beyond back office work

  • India is drawing global tech firms. AdaniConnex (a joint venture under Adani Enterprises) partnered with Google, which plans about $15 billion for an AI infrastructure hub at Visakhapatnam. Amazon plans $12.7 billion for cloud infrastructure in India through 2030 2.
  • Analysts say the build-out could help India capture demand for AI inference, the day-to-day running of AI models, even if the US stays ahead in foundational model training 3.
  • Plans also cover chipmaking. Tata Electronics intends to invest $11 billion in a semiconductor fab (fabrication plant, where chips are manufactured) in Gujarat 1.
  • A coordinated $125 billion effort by India’s largest companies is drawing comparisons to the U.S. “Project Stargate,” framed as a national strategy to keep a technological edge over rivals such as China 1.
