Reddit shares sink on report it may curb Google AI access

Reddit, a US-based social media and discussion platform, saw its shares fall 9% on July 22.

The drop followed a report saying the company had discussed potentially cutting off Google’s access to Reddit content for AI use as traffic from Google Search declines.

The report said Reddit’s 2024 deal with Google, worth US$60 million a year, is ending soon, and the companies are discussing a possible renewal.

It also said Google traffic fell 23% at Politico, about 25% at CNN, and more than 85% at Business Insider between June 2025 and 2026.

Public details of Reddit’s agreement with Google remain limited, but the deal reportedly allowed Google to train AI models on Reddit content.

Reddit also has a partnership with OpenAI that lets OpenAI train AI models on Reddit content.

Reddit is due to report second-quarter earnings on July 30 after first-quarter revenue rose 69% year on year to US$663 million.
