Razorpay joins MeitY Hub to back 200 early-stage AI startups

Razorpay has partnered with MeitY Startup Hub (MSH) to support 200 early-stage AI startups over the next two years.

Through this partnership, Razorpay will offer access to its payment gateway, corporate credit cards, and mentorship for startups onboarded via MSH.

MSH, part of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, supports 400+ incubators across India to foster tech innovation.

Razorpay’s past initiatives, such as the Rize program, have already helped over 450 startups in scaling and solving market problems.

MSH CEO Panneerselvam Madanagopal said this collaboration aims to give AI startups the right tools, skills, and guidance for long-term growth.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s AI startup funding faces a paradoxical climate compared to global trends

Despite India’s AI startup ecosystem growing rapidly with over 140 AI startups raising $1.5 billion since 2020, the sector experienced a troubling 53% drop in year-on-year funding (from $305.9 million to $143.6 million)1.

This decline presents a stark contrast to global AI investment trends, where funding increased by 62% to reach $110 billion during the same period1.

The discrepancy highlights a critical challenge for Indian AI startups: while the market potential is significant (with projections showing the Indian generative AI market exceeding $17 billion by 2030)2, investor confidence remains cautious domestically.

Razorpay’s initiative with MeitY addresses this funding gap by providing essential infrastructure support that reduces capital requirements for early-stage AI ventures, potentially helping startups overcome the “valley of death” where many promising ideas fail due to resource constraints.

This partnership model showcases how established fintech players can strengthen the ecosystem by transferring knowledge and resources rather than just capital, creating a multiplier effect for innovation.

2️⃣ Mentorship ecosystems create virtuous cycles of startup development

Razorpay’s own journey demonstrates the transformative power of structured mentorship. The company grew from a remote team of 9 during its Y Combinator batch to over 50 employees and 8,000+ merchants within just 18 months3.

This rapid scaling was facilitated by Y Combinator’s mentorship model, which emphasizes regular interactions among startups and helps refine business vision and investor pitches4.
