Ray Dalio exits advisory role at Indonesia’s Danantara
Hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio will no longer serve as an adviser to Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, despite an earlier announcement of his planned involvement.
Dalio’s absence was noticed during a May presentation, and the advisory board now includes Jeffrey Sachs, former fund manager Chapman Taylor, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and former Credit Suisse Asia head Helman Sitohang.
The reasons for Dalio’s withdrawal are unclear, and he did not comment through a spokesperson.
Danantara spokeswoman, Kania Sutisnawinata, said that the fund is finalizing its programs and business plan but did not address Dalio’s status.
Sachs confirmed his participation as a pro bono adviser, while Taylor acknowledged his role on LinkedIn.
The fund, part of President Prabowo’s economic agenda, targets US$900 billion in assets and seeks US$20 billion in reinvested dividends.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Governance challenges remain a persistent issue for sovereign wealth funds
Dalio’s withdrawal from Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund aligns with his cautious approach to public initiatives with governance concerns.
In 2020, he similarly withdrew from a public-private educational partnership in Connecticut after committing $100 million, specifically citing political interference as the reason 1.
The Indonesian fund has faced concerns about transparency and potential political interference, which contributed to market volatility with Indonesian stocks hitting four-year lows as investors reacted to these governance issues 2.
These governance challenges aren’t unique to Danantara. They reflect broader concerns about sovereign wealth funds globally, where the balance between political oversight and independent investment decisions remains delicate.
The fund’s reporting structure directly to President Prabowo has heightened these concerns, as investors watch carefully for signs of political influence in investment decisions 3.
2️⃣ High-profile advisors serve as critical credibility signals for new sovereign funds
