Qualcomm unveils $20b stock buyback

Qualcomm unveiled a US$20 billion stock buyback programme and raised its quarterly cash dividend to US$0.92 from US$0.89.

The buyback is in addition to an existing US$2.1 billion share repurchase authority and was announced on March 17.

Shares rose more than 2% in premarket trading after the announcement.

Cristiano Amon, chief executive officer, said the company remains focused on stockholder returns and executing its ongoing diversification opportunities.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Qualcomm’s financial muscle helps support a $20 billion buyback authorization

  • Qualcomm turns nearly 29% of revenue into free cash flow (cash left after operating expenses and capital spending), totaling $12.8 billion in fiscal year 2025 1.
  • The operating margin stands at 27.9%, so it keeps almost $28 in operating profit for every $100 of revenue 1.
  • A debt-to-equity ratio of 0.70 points to a healthy balance sheet with relatively low leverage (reliance on borrowing) 1.
  • A financial profile score of 91 out of 100 captures its health across profitability, cash flow, and liquidity (ability to meet short-term obligations) 1.

The buyback can be read as confidence in diversification beyond smartphones

  • The authorization arrives as Qualcomm pushes beyond its core mobile business, which has faced demand weakness and inventory issues 2.
  • Qualcomm has called its goal a “connected processor company for the intelligent edge,” and says it plans to expand its addressable market (the total potential revenue opportunity) to about $700 billion over the next decade 2.
  • The plan leans on automotive and the Internet of Things (IoT). Qualcomm said its design-win pipeline (expected future business based on customer commitments) across connectivity, digital cockpit and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) now exceeds $30 billion 2.
  • The buyback also lines up with management’s stated focus on stockholder returns and confidence in long-term cash generation from diversification 2.
