Qualcomm to buy AI infrastructure startup Modular
Qualcomm said on June 24 it would buy Modular, an AI infrastructure startup based in the US, for an undisclosed sum as the chipmaker looks to diversify beyond its core smartphone business.
A June 22 report said the companies were in advanced talks on a deal valuing Modular at about US$4 billion.
Modular builds AI infrastructure for model development and deployment, including the Mojo programming language, the MAX framework, and cloud and self-hosted tools to run models across different hardware.
The deal gives Qualcomm software that could help it build a more portable AI stack in a market shaped by Nvidia’s CUDA software platform.
Modular has publicly criticized CUDA over vendor lock-in.
LinkedIn lists Modular’s last round at US$250 million, though investor and valuation details were not available in the reviewed materials.
Qualcomm said the deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026.
