Qiming Venture Partners invests in China-based desktop CNC startup
Qiming Venture Partners has invested “tens of millions” of yuan in Makera, a China-based maker of desktop computer numerical control (CNC) machines, in a pre-series A round.
The funding will support Makera’s research and development, manufacturing, and international expansion.
Founded in 2019, Makera develops consumer-grade desktop CNC devices aimed at makers, small businesses, and educators.
The company’s machines feature automatic tool changing, auto-leveling, dust collection, and rotary machining functions.
Separately, Qiming Venture Partners is a China-based venture capital firm focused on early- and growth-stage technology and healthcare companies.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Limited track record clouds mainstream Computer Numerical Control (CNC) adoption claims
- Makera pitches desktop CNC as near its “iPhone moment.” Funding news and public sources give no sales, shipment, or satisfaction data for Carvera or Carvera Air.
- Global spend on small-format machines reached $369.57 million in 2023 1 while the total CNC category hit $67.5 billion 2. That gap keeps this segment niche.
- A “thousand-dollar-level” Z1 price matters with context. Forecasts put desktop CNC milling at $1,292.3 million in 2025 and $1,894.6 million in 2035 3, which means a long ramp rather than a fast smartphone-style jump.
Suppliers and training providers can tap adjacent revenue as barriers fall
- If the Z1 near-$1,000 price and integrated software cut setup friction, sellers of CNC tooling could gain. Cutters and bits need replacement. Workholding systems (devices that clamp and secure material) also see demand, along with dust collection gear and raw materials. Woodworking applications are projected to grow from $722 million in 2023 to $1,318 million by 2032 4.
- Schools hold 70% of desktop CNC milling share in 2025 3. That opens room for curriculum firms and technical training groups to design courses for entry units like the Z1. STEM stands for science plus technology plus engineering plus math.
- Through 2035, China is set for 5.3% CAGR 3 while India tracks at 4.9% 3. Regional distributors and after-sales service networks in these countries can take early positions as Asia-Pacific expands.
