🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Qatar positions itself as regional AI infrastructure hub with targeted capacity expansion
MEEZA’s decision to dedicate 6MW of its 44MW expansion specifically to AI services reflects Qatar’s strategic positioning in the rapidly growing Middle East technology market.
This AI-focused approach aligns with broader regional trends, as data centers globally are projected to consume approximately 945 terawatt hours by 2030, largely driven by AI and digital transformation demands 1.
Qatar’s timing is particularly strategic given that the country’s IT services market is expected to reach $1.2 billion by 2029, with significant investments in AI and innovation programs projected to reach $2.5 billion 2.
The expansion directly supports Qatar’s National Digital Agenda 2030, which aims to contribute approximately $11 billion to the country’s non-hydrocarbon GDP and create 26,000 jobs in the ICT sector by 2030 3.
With 99% internet penetration and over 96% of registered businesses being SMEs, Qatar presents a substantial domestic market for advanced AI services while serving as a regional gateway 4.
2️⃣ Islamic financing structures enable major technology infrastructure investments in Gulf markets
MEEZA’s use of a Murabaha credit facility from Dukhan Bank demonstrates how Islamic financing principles are being successfully applied to large-scale technology infrastructure projects.
This $219 million commodity Murabaha structure provides Sharia-compliant financing for capital-intensive data center expansion, reflecting the growing sophistication of Islamic banking in supporting technology sector growth.
