🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Krafton’s success reveals the long-term value of battle royale pioneers
Krafton’s record quarter demonstrates the remarkable sustainability of PUBG, a game that fundamentally transformed the industry when launched in 2017.
The company has successfully maintained PUBG as a cornerstone IP, generating over $17 billion in lifetime revenue and selling 75 million units, making it the best-selling PC game ever and second highest-grossing battle royale after Fortnite 1.
This performance is particularly notable in today’s competitive market, where player retention is increasingly difficult. PUBG’s continued strength after eight years highlights how first-mover advantage in a genre can translate to long-term market relevance.
While many battle royale competitors have come and gone, Krafton’s ability to evolve PUBG across platforms demonstrates how pioneering franchises can remain relevant through consistent updates and platform expansion.
The record-breaking quarter illustrates how companies that establish genre-defining IPs can leverage them for sustained growth, similar to how Riot Games has maintained League of Legends or Valve with Counter-Strike.
2️⃣ Mobile growth reflects shifting revenue dynamics in gaming
Krafton’s mobile segment generated 532.4 billion won ($370 million), nearly 61% of the company’s total quarterly revenue, reflecting the global shift toward mobile gaming dominance.
This emphasis on mobile aligns with industry trends, as mobile gaming now represents 49% of the global gaming market, generating approximately $92 billion in 2024 2.
The success of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) specifically showcases the importance of localization in capturing emerging markets, with India becoming a strategic growth center where Krafton is further expanding through the acquisition of Nautilus Mobile’s cricket game franchise.
