PS5 price increases by 25% in Europe
Sony Group Corp. has raised the price of its PlayStation 5 console in Europe and the United Kingdom by approximately 25%.
The new prices, effective April 14, set the PS5 at €500 (US$540) in Europe and £430 (US$564.16) in the UK.
The company announced the decision on its PlayStation blog, citing inflation as a reason for the price increase.
Australia and New Zealand are also affected by this adjustment.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Console price increases mid-lifecycle break historical patterns
Sony’s 25% price increase for the PlayStation 5 represents a notable deviation from traditional console pricing strategies.
Historically, console makers have implemented price cuts rather than increases during a product’s lifecycle to stimulate sales 1.
The timing is particularly unusual as price increases typically occur at the launch of new hardware generations or upgraded models, not four years into a console’s lifecycle when sales would naturally be expected to slow.
When comparing to inflation-adjusted prices, the PS5’s new European price point pushes it toward the higher end of the historical spectrum, approaching the notably expensive PlayStation 3 which launched at $499-$599 in 2006 (equivalent to roughly $790 in today’s dollars) 23.
This upward pricing move signals shifting industry economics where manufacturers may no longer be able to absorb rising production costs while maintaining hardware profitability.
2️⃣ Tariffs and inflation create cascading price effects across gaming markets
Sony’s price increase aligns with broader economic pressures affecting the entire gaming industry.
The Trump administration’s proposed import tariffs could reach as high as 10% baseline with specific tariffs up to 104% on products from China, potentially forcing all console manufacturers to implement similar price adjustments globally 4.
The timing coincides with concerning inflation data showing that while overall inflation has moderated to 2.4% (down from 2.8% in February 2025), economists warn that new tariffs could reverse this trend and push inflation rates back up to around 4% by year-end 5.
