Prudential, HSBC join $220m series D for Hong Kongโ€™s WeLab

WeLab, a pan-Asian fintech platform operating digital banks in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Mainland China, has raised US$220 million in a series D round, according to an announcement on January 15, 2026.

The round includes both debt and equity investments from new and existing backers such as Prudential Hong Kong Ltd, Fubon Bank (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Investment Corporation, TOM Group, Allianz X, and HSBC.

WeLab said the funds will support expansion in Southeast Asia, deepen its leadership in Hong Kong, and help launch new AI-driven business lines, along with product and platform enhancements.

The company operates WeLab Bank and WeLend in Hong Kong, various business lines in Mainland China, and Bank Saqu in Indonesia, and claims to serve over 70 million users.

๐Ÿง  Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Series D split and valuation stay hidden, which clouds investor confidence

  • WeLab raised US$220 million in Series D using both debt and equity. The split matters since debt needs repayment while equity involves long-term risk and dilutes current holders.
  • The company kept the valuation private. Readers cannot tell if this is an up or flat or down round. An up round means the valuation rose. A flat round means no change. A down round means it fell.
  • Taken together, the hidden valuation and financing mix make investor confidence hard to read. They also make comparisons with past raises tricky.

Southeast Asia fintech vendors can time entry by tracking WeLab licensing and hiring

  • Expansion across Southeast Asia needs builds in each market. Teams must set up Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Business (KYB) checks. They must link to payment rails such as bank connections and card networks. They need collections partners, cloud infrastructure, and AI integration. Vendors can watch licensing steps and regulatory filings in target countries. Senior hiring can flag near-term spending.
  • WeLab already runs Bank Saqu in Indonesia. The company will need vendor support tailored to local rules and customer behavior. Pitch micro-merchant payments. Pitch alternative credit scoring. Pitch flexible savings products.
  • An AI-first partnership with Google is in place at WeLab. That will drive demand for training data services, localized natural language processing (NLP) for customer support, and compliance automation. AI vendors with Southeast Asia-specific tools can engage WeLabโ€™s regional product and risk teams early.
