Prosus turns profitable as CEO shifts strategy

Prosus NV, a technology investment firm, has reported its first-ever trading profit, posting adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of US$179 million.

This marks a turnaround from a US$118 million loss in the previous period.

Based in Amsterdam and a subsidiary of South Africa’s Naspers Ltd., Prosus is shifting its focus from investments to developing large-scale lifestyle platforms.

CEO Fabricio Bloisi, who took the helm in July 2024, aims to double the group’s market value by mid-2028.

The firm’s shares have increased by 20% so far this year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Prosus’s pivot to profitability reflects broader tech investment shifts

Prosus’s return to profitability mirrors a significant transformation happening across the technology investment landscape in 2024.

The company’s US$179 million trading profit comes as Deloitte’s research shows only 18% of tech leaders now pursuing radical digital transformation, down dramatically from 44% in the previous year 1.

This shift from growth-at-all-costs to profitability aligns with Bain & Company’s observation that private equity investors are increasingly prioritizing operational improvements and sustainable EBITDA growth rather than just revenue expansion 2.

Prosus’s own financial journey reflects this transition. Their 2023 annual report showed incremental progress, with profits from core businesses increasing from US$112 million to US$144 million before this latest profitable quarter 3.

This strategic reorientation addresses previous cash flow challenges, as earlier reports indicated Prosus had substantial cash reserves of US$18.29 billion but struggled with negative levered free cash flow of -$203 million 4.

2️⃣ Building lifestyle platforms targets evolving consumer behaviors

Prosus’s strategic shift toward building lifestyle platforms directly addresses fundamental changes in consumer behavior documented across multiple market research reports.

McKinsey’s consumer trends research shows that despite economic concerns, e-commerce and food delivery services, key areas for Prosus, have achieved over 90% usage rates in key markets, representing a permanent shift in consumer habits 5.
