Prosus CEO sees super app shift in Europe

Prosus CEO Fabricio Bloisi predicts major changes in Europe’s delivery app sector. He envisions super apps that combine food delivery, travel, and entertainment.

Since becoming CEO in July 2024, he has focused on growth and unifying Prosus’ investments.

The company recently acquired Just Eat Takeaway for US$4.3 billion, making it the fourth-largest food delivery firm globally by gross transaction value.

Prosus already holds stakes in iFood, Meituan, Swiggy, and Delivery Hero.

Bloisi sees Europe’s sector heading toward consolidation, as seen in Deliveroo’s struggles and its possible US$3.6 billion sale to DoorDash.

Prosus plans to link services like iFood, Despegar, and Sympla into a broader ecosystem.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Europe’s tech valuation gap reveals structural competitive disadvantages

Prosus CEO Bloisi’s observation about European food delivery companies being valued at $4-5 billion versus $80 billion in America or $120 billion in China highlights a persistent systemic challenge for European tech.

This valuation disparity extends beyond food delivery to messaging, e-commerce, and payments, reflecting Europe’s fragmented market structure where companies must navigate different regulations, languages, and consumer preferences across numerous countries.

The European food delivery market, while substantial at a projected $66 billion by 2027 with a CAGR of 10.7%, remains highly fragmented with different leaders in each country. Deliveroo dominates the UK with approximately 50% market share, Uber Eats leads France with 44%, while Glovo commands Spain with 48,000 digital storefronts1.

This fragmentation has prevented European players from achieving the operational efficiencies and market dominance that American and Chinese counterparts enjoy, limiting their scale and valuation potential despite serving a combined population similar to those markets.

2️⃣ Super app strategy aims to replicate Meituan’s ecosystem success

Bloisi’s vision to create Meituan-style super apps that combine food delivery, travel, and entertainment represents a strategic pivot from single-service platforms toward integrated lifestyle ecosystems.

The plan leverages iFood’s 120 million monthly deliveries as an engagement foundation, with Prosus integrating its recently acquired Despegar travel agency ($1.7 billion) and ticketing firm Sympla to create a comprehensive service offering that keeps users within its ecosystem.
