US proptech firm Opendoor rallies as crypto investor buys shares
Opendoor Technologies saw its shares jump as much as 16% on August 12, 2025 after Anthony Pompliano, a cryptocurrency investor and podcaster, disclosed he had invested in the company.
Opendoor, based in San Francisco, runs a digital real estate platform focused on iBuying, or purchasing and reselling homes using software.
The company went public in 2020 and was facing possible delisting from Nasdaq after a drop in value linked to higher interest rates in 2022.
Opendoor’s shares have experienced sharp swings in recent weeks, including a 245% rise at the end of July 2025, following increased interest from retail traders and posts by Eric Jackson of EMJ Capital.
CEO Carrie Wheeler said the company is now exploring new ways for homeowners to sell, following its recent stock rally.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Massive revenue scale highlights the capital-intensive challenge of iBuying
Opendoor’s financial metrics reveal why the iBuying model struggles despite significant market activity.
The company generated $5.18 billion in revenue over the trailing twelve months but posted a negative profit margin of -5.89% and a return on equity of -41.33%1.
This means Opendoor is processing billions in real estate transactions while losing money on each deal, demonstrating the razor-thin margins inherent in buying and flipping homes at scale.
The company’s debt-to-equity ratio of 346.12% and total cash position of $789 million further illustrate the capital-intensive nature of holding real estate inventory2.
These numbers explain why the company was facing potential delisting before the recent meme stock surge. The business model requires massive capital deployment with minimal profitability.
2️⃣ Industry consolidation signals structural challenges beyond interest rate cycles
The retail trading frenzy around Opendoor masks a broader retreat from iBuying by established players.
Major competitors including Zillow and Redfin have exited the iBuying space due to unsustainable business models, leaving Opendoor as one of the few remaining players at scale3.
