US power firm Vistra bets on AI growth with $1.9b gas plant deal

Vistra Corp agreed to buy seven natural gas power plants for US$1.9 billion from Lotus Infrastructure Partners.

The deal adds 2,600 megawatts of capacity across five states, driven by rising electricity demand from AI-powered data centers.

This move follows similar acquisitions by NRG Energy (US$12 billion) and Constellation Energy (US$16.4 billion) earlier this year.

Vistra shares rose 3% after the news, with the stock up 10% year-to-date amid growing investor interest.

Analysts expect more deals as data centers and US industrial reshoring boost demand for power assets.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Power producers’ remarkable turnaround after years of financial struggles

Vistra’s latest $1.9 billion natural gas plant acquisition represents a dramatic reversal for independent power producers who faced financial distress just a few years ago.

The company reported a dramatic swing from a $1.21 billion net loss in 2022 to $1.49 billion in profits for 2023, demonstrating the sector’s resurgence 1.

This financial transformation extends across the industry, with NRG’s stock up 72% and Constellation up 27% this year, reflecting investors’ renewed confidence in previously struggling power producers.

The sector’s recovery is particularly notable given that major players like Vistra maintained strong liquidity positions ($5.8 billion as of December 2023) even while pursuing growth strategies 1.

This acquisition continues Vistra’s pattern of strategic growth, following its $6.8 billion Energy Harbor deal in 2023 and its earlier $1.7 billion merger with Dynegy in 2018 2.

2️⃣ A diversified energy approach balancing immediate AI demands with long-term clean energy transition

While investing heavily in natural gas capacity to meet surging AI data center demand, Vistra has simultaneously built a diversified generation portfolio.

The company’s integration strategy is evident in its generation mix, which includes approximately 40,000 megawatts across natural gas, nuclear, coal, solar, and battery storage facilities 3.
