🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ European defense spending surge creates unprecedented market opportunity
The €500 million fund represents just a fraction of the massive capital flowing into European defense as military budgets reach levels not seen since the Cold War.
EU Member States’ defense budgets jumped from €218 billion in 2021 to €326 billion in 2024, with projections showing at least another €100 billion increase by 2027 1. This represents a 50% increase in just three years, creating substantial market opportunities for defense technology companies.
Germany alone increased military spending by 28% to €88.5 billion in 2024, making it the largest spender in Central and Western Europe 2. This national spending surge directly benefits companies as government contracts and procurement opportunities multiply across the continent.
The scale becomes even more apparent when considering that total European military expenditure rose 17% to €693 billion in 2024 2, indicating that the fund is positioned to capture returns from one of the fastest-growing sectors in the European economy.
2️⃣ Venture capital shifts focus from Silicon Valley tech model to defense-first approach
The emergence of dedicated defense funds marks a fundamental change in European venture capital, moving away from the traditional reluctance to invest in military technology.
Defense tech funding reached $3 billion globally in 2024, representing an 11% increase from 2023, demonstrating growing investor confidence in the sector 3. European success stories like Helsing, which raised €600 million and achieved a €12 billion valuation, prove that defense startups can deliver venture-scale returns 4.
This shift is particularly notable given that European founders were historically hesitant to pursue defense-related ventures due to cultural concerns 5. The NATO Innovation Fund’s €1 billion size signals institutional validation of defense tech as a legitimate investment category 4.
