Pony.ai launches robotaxi passenger service in Singapore

Pony.ai has launched robotaxi passenger services in Singapore with ComfortDelGro in Punggol.

The pilot starts with invited residents on a 12-kilometer route linking housing areas, malls, and public transport, ahead of a wider rollout.

The route connects neighborhoods including Punggol Northshore and Waterway Sunrise, with stops such as Oasis Terraces, Punggol Plaza, One Punggol, and Punggol Coast Mall.

Pony.ai said during its 2025 earnings call that it plans to deploy more than 3,000 robotaxis in over 20 cities this year, with nearly half overseas.

The Singapore launch follows Pony.ai’s September 2025 entry into Singapore via a partnership with ComfortDelGro, and earlier autonomous mobility pilots in Guangzhou.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pony.ai’s Singapore bet rests on a unit-economics milestone

  • Pony.ai’s Singapore rollout follows its Gen-7 robotaxis reaching per-vehicle unit economics breakeven in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, two Chinese cities where it previously ran autonomous mobility pilots 1.
  • In Shenzhen, each vehicle brought in a one-month daily average net revenue of 338 yuan (US$49) with a daily average of 23 orders per vehicle as of February 28 2.
  • Costs fell after a roughly 70% reduction in the bill of materials (BOM, the cost of components) for its latest autonomous driving kit 2. Gasgoo, a Chinese auto industry publication, reported Pony.ai said commercial insurance costs were roughly 50% lower than for traditional taxis 3.
  • Per-vehicle breakeven excludes research-and-development and administrative spending. Gasgoo reported Pony.ai posted a US$61.6 million net loss in Q3 2025 3.

A practical playbook for autonomous vehicle expansion takes shape

  • Pony.ai’s partnership with ComfortDelGro fits its “dual-engine” strategy that grows in China and overseas markets at the same time 4.
  • The approach pairs Pony.ai with local transport operators that handle daily operations and fleet management, while Pony.ai supplies the autonomous driving technology and support 5.
  • It focuses on places such as Singapore and Dubai, where government backing and strong infrastructure can ease rollout challenges like driver shortages 6, 7.
  • The plan puts commercial integration ahead of pure research and development, which raises pressure on traditional transport companies to team up with autonomous vehicle firms to stay competitive in urban mobility 6.
