Plug and Play Japan launches first fund for startups

Plug and Play Japan has launched its first fund, “Plug and Play Japan Fund I,” to support startups in Japan.

The fund aims to solve key challenges such as limited access to global markets for Japanese startups.

It has secured over 3 billion yen (around US$21.1 million) in its initial closing, with backing from MUFG Bank; the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN; Tokyu Land Corporation; and Sazaby League.

The target is to expand the fund to 5 billion yen (around US$35.1 million).

Around 80% of the fund will go to Japanese startups, while the remaining 20% will be allocated to international startups that align with Japan’s market.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Japan’s startup ecosystem faces a critical global expansion gap despite growth

Japan’s venture capital scene has been expanding significantly, with total startup investment reaching $5.4 billion in 2023, marking a 25% increase from 2013 levels 1.

Despite this growth, Japanese startups still face a notable international competitiveness gap, with the country hosting only 10 unicorns compared to 714 in the U.S. and 316 in China 1.

A key barrier is funding scale, as the average Series A round in Japan is approximately $5 million, significantly lower than U.S. counterparts, making it difficult for Japanese startups to achieve global scale 1.

The structure of Plug and Play Japan’s new fund directly addresses this challenge by allocating 80% to Japanese startups while leveraging their global network. This initiative aims to tackle what industry experts identify as Japanese startups’ “lack of access to global markets” 2.

The fund’s backing from established institutions like MUFG Bank signals growing recognition that Japanese startups need stronger bridges to international markets to compete effectively on the world stage.

2️⃣ Shifting corporate-startup dynamics transforming Japan’s innovation landscape

Japan’s startup funding landscape has undergone a dramatic shift, with corporate venture capital now playing a crucial role. Japanese companies contribute approximately 30% of all venture funding, while foreign investors account for only 10% 3.

This represents a significant evolution from traditional corporate behaviors, with “Open Innovation” becoming mainstream as 50% of startup investments in 2018 came from large companies. This shift shows that major corporations are increasingly seeing startups as innovation partners rather than competitors 4.
