Pinterest profit miss outweighs Gen Z, AI-driven gains

Pinterest posted adjusted earnings per share of 33 cents in the second quarter, missing analyst expectations of 35 cents, according to LSEG.

Revenue rose 17% year-on-year to US$998.2 million, beating estimates of US$974.8 million.

The company, which has gained about 35% in stock value this year, saw a rise in Gen Z users, now making up over half its user base, and increased adoption of its AI-powered ad suite Performance+.

CEO Bill Ready said Performance+ adoption among mid-market advertisers is growing, and is reducing campaign creation times.

Pinterest forecast third-quarter revenue between US$1.03 billion and US$1.05 billion, roughly matching analyst projections.

Ad pricing dropped 25% year-on-year, as more impressions now come from international markets where prices are lower.

Global monthly active users rose 11% to 578 million, exceeding estimates, but net user additions slowed compared to the previous quarter.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Platform maturity signals emerge as user acquisition growth decelerates

Pinterest’s quarterly user additions dropped from 17 million to 8 million between Q1 and Q2, suggesting the platform may be reaching saturation in its core markets.

This deceleration pattern typically occurs when social media platforms exhaust their most accessible user segments and face increasing competition for remaining potential users.

The slowdown mirrors what other major platforms have experienced. Facebook’s daily active user growth, for example, dropped to single digits in mature markets like North America and Europe before the company pivoted to focus on monetization improvements.

Pinterest’s total user base of 578 million represents significant scale, but the quarter-over-quarter growth decline indicates the company must now prioritize revenue per user rather than pure user acquisition.

This shift explains Pinterest’s increased focus on AI-powered advertising tools like Performance+, which can extract more value from existing users rather than relying on expanding the user base.

2️⃣ AI-powered advertising automation becomes essential for mid-market competition
