Pine Labs to launch stablecoin prepaid cards in 9 countries

Pine Labs will launch a stablecoin-backed prepaid card across nine countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia by the end of April, CEO Amrish Rau told Reuters.

The prepaid card will be funded from consumers’ digital wallets with stablecoins and will convert them into local currencies at the point of sale in real time.

Pine Labs does not plan to launch the product in India or China and aims to launch in countries that have a “stablecoin-friendly stance” without specifying which ones.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pine Labs’ stablecoin card keeps it in the race with global rivals

  • chief executive Amrish Rau said Indian fintechs that ignore stablecoins and cross-border payments could get “left behind” 1.
  • The rollout mirrors steps already taken by Stripe, PayPal, and Klarna, which use stablecoins for cross-border transfers 1.
  • It fits Pine Labs’ tech-driven growth push, including AI-based payments and a wider cross-border footprint 1.
  • Pine Labs also wants a share of the stablecoin market, valued at over $310 billion 1.

A new path for fintechs in tightly regulated markets

  • Pine Labs follows a pattern where a firm grows in a large, regulated market like India, then sells more experimental products in countries with looser rules 1.
  • Its existing overseas business, about 17% of revenue, gives it room to try ideas that do not work under current Indian rules 1.
  • The card lets shoppers pay with stablecoins from digital wallets while merchants get local currency in real time at the point of sale, linking digital assets with everyday commerce without forcing merchants to change systems.
  • This model could spread to fintechs in places like India and China, helping them compete in new tech while local rules catch up 1.
