US photonics chip design firm OpenLight nets $34m series A

OpenLight, a photonics chip design company based in Santa Clara, has raised US$34 million in a series A round co-led by Xora Innovation and Capricorn Investment Group.

The funding marks OpenLight’s shift from being a Synopsys subsidiary to an independent, venture-backed firm.

Other investors in the round include Mayfield, Juniper Networks (now part of HPE), Lam Capital, New Legacy Ventures, and K2 Access.

OpenLight develops photonic application-specific integrated circuits (PASICs) and provides a process design kit (PDK) for use in AI data centers, telecom, and other sectors.

The company says its PDK, validated by Tower Semiconductor, is used by over 20 firms to design and manufacture PASICs.

OpenLight holds more than 360 patents covering its technology.

The new capital will be used to expand its PDK library and scale up its team as it supports customers moving into volume production over the next year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Corporate spin-outs accelerate when markets reach inflection points

OpenLight’s transition from a Synopsys subsidiary to an independent venture-backed company demonstrates how corporations time spin-outs to capitalize on market opportunities.

The company completed its transition just as AI data centers created massive demand for optical interconnects, raising $34 million in Series A funding1.

This follows OpenLight’s corporate heritage—originally spun out from Juniper Networks in 2022 after leveraging technology from Aurrion, which Juniper had acquired in 20162.

Corporate parents often retain promising technologies as subsidiaries until market conditions justify independent funding, allowing them to maintain control while markets develop.

When demand surges create clear paths to significant returns, these subsidiaries become attractive spin-out candidates that can command premium valuations from venture investors.

2️⃣ Infrastructure bottlenecks create concentrated investment waves in enabling technologies
