PhonePe’s Pincode launches 10-minute medicine delivery
PhonePe’s ecommerce platform, Pincode, has launched a 10-minute medicine delivery service in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai.
The service is available 24/7 and connects users with nearby medical stores for prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines without delivery charges.
Unlike other platforms that use dark store models, Pincode sources medicines directly from local pharmacies and offers discounts.
Customers who do not have prescriptions can select a “no prescription” option. This option allows a qualified doctor to provide a free consultation and issue a digital prescription.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Quick commerce’s rapid expansion into healthcare addresses India’s accessibility gaps
The shift to 10-minute medicine delivery represents a significant evolution in India’s healthcare access landscape, particularly in urban centers facing mobility challenges.
India’s pharmaceutical market has been growing consistently at 11-12% annually, with the country producing 95% of its domestic medicine demand locally, creating a strong supply foundation for rapid delivery models 1.
PhonePe’s approach of connecting users directly to neighborhood pharmacies (rather than using dark stores) helps integrate existing local medical establishments into the digital economy while maintaining their community presence 2.
This marketplace model reflects a broader trend in Indian quick commerce, where companies like Pincode are developing asset-light approaches that reduce operational costs while leveraging existing retail infrastructure 3.
The addition of teleconsultation services for those without prescriptions addresses a critical healthcare accessibility gap, potentially reducing barriers for patients who might otherwise delay seeking medication 2.
2️⃣ Regulatory uncertainty shapes business models in Indian e-pharmacy
The current regulatory framework under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 only explicitly permits physical pharmacy sales, creating a challenging environment for digital medicine delivery platforms 1.
While the government proposed draft rules in 2018 to regulate e-pharmacies, the lack of finalized regulations has led companies to adopt varying approaches to ensure compliance while meeting market demands 1.
PhonePe’s partnership with neighborhood pharmacies appears strategically designed to navigate regulatory uncertainty by working within existing pharmacy infrastructure rather than creating separate fulfillment centers 4.
