Philippines fines Grab-owned Move It $8.7m over rider cap

The Philippines’ Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) ordered Move It PH to pay a P555.7 million (US$8.7 million) fine for exceeding its rider cap under the government’s motorcycle taxi pilot program in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro.

In an order, the regulator counted 73,321 active Move It riders as of May, versus an authorised allocation of 17,746. LTFRB imposed a P10,000 (US$157) fine for each of the 55,575 excess riders.

LTFRB also said Move It ignored a one-year moratorium on onboarding new riders. The regulator rejected Move It’s argument that its internal rider classifications changed how the cap should be applied, and warned that nonpayment could lead to suspension from the pilot program or revocation of accreditation.

Move It was acquired by Grab Philippines in 2022 and is one of three platforms covered by the pilot program, alongside Angkas and JoyRide.
