Pharma giant Regeneron to buy genetics firm 23andMe for $256m

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has announced its agreement to acquire 23andMe for US$256 million.

The deal includes 23andMe’s Total Health and Research Services business, as well as its biobank of genetic samples and customer data.

This acquisition follows 23andMe’s bankruptcy filing in March, after the company struggled to achieve profitability.

Once valued at US$6 billion in 2021, 23andMe faced financial challenges that led to its sale through a bankruptcy auction.

The acquisition is expected to finalize later this year, pending approval from the US Bankruptcy Court.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ 23andMe’s tumultuous regulatory journey illustrates genetic testing’s complex path to market

Founded in 2006 by Anne Wojcicki and Linda Avey, 23andMe pioneered direct-to-consumer genetic testing but faced significant regulatory hurdles throughout its existence 1.

In 2013, the FDA ordered 23andMe to stop selling health-related genetic tests due to concerns about their reliability, forcing the company to limit its offerings to ancestry reports while working with regulators 1.

After years of collaboration with the FDA, the company finally received authorization in 2015 to provide carrier status reports for certain genetic conditions, marking a turning point in its business model 1.

This regulatory journey highlights the challenges of bringing novel healthcare technologies to market, as 23andMe had to balance innovation with scientific validation and consumer protection requirements.

Despite these hurdles, the company built a massive biobank from over 15 million customers, demonstrating the scale of consumer interest in personal genomics despite regulatory challenges 2.

2️⃣ The pharmaceutical value of genetic databases drives industry consolidation

Regeneron’s $256 million acquisition of 23andMe’s assets highlights the significant value of genetic databases for pharmaceutical research and development 2.

Long before bankruptcy, 23andMe had established contracts with major pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Genentech, monetizing their growing genetic database while building their consumer business 3.
