Perplexity teams up with PayPal for in-chat shopping
Perplexity has partnered with PayPal to let US users make purchases directly within its chat platform.
Customers can now book travel, buy products, and get tickets without leaving the app.
Payments will be processed via PayPal or Venmo, with both platforms handling shipping, tracking, and invoicing. One-click checkout is available through PayPal’s passkey technology.
This move builds on Perplexity’s ecommerce launch last year, which added a shopping feature for paid users and integrated with platforms like Shopify.
PayPal will manage authentication and auto-fill billing and shipping details to simplify the process.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Conversational commerce matures after seven-year evolution
Perplexity’s integration with PayPal represents the fulfillment of a prediction tech leader Chris Messina made back in 2016, when he coined the term “conversational commerce” and forecasted that messaging apps would become primary platforms for business interactions.
This evolution began with basic integrations like Uber’s early Facebook Messenger partnership, which allowed ride bookings directly through chat, and has now advanced to comprehensive shopping experiences within AI interfaces 1.
The timing aligns with broader industry shifts, as messaging apps surpassed traditional social networks in monthly active users years ago, creating the foundation for today’s chat-based commerce 1.
Perplexity’s approach addresses a key challenge Messina identified early on: discovering and accessing services within conversation flows, by creating a seamless path from question to purchase without platform switching.
The 42% year-over-year increase in AI-driven chat services for buying decisions (cited in the original article) confirms this transition from experimental technology to mainstream consumer behavior.
2️⃣ Payment networks compete for AI commerce dominance
PayPal’s partnership with Perplexity highlights an emerging battleground among payment processors competing to power AI transactions, with companies like Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard all vying for integration deals.
This competition is driven by the substantial growth potential in the payment gateway market, which is projected to reach $106.4 billion by 2030 according to industry forecasts 2.
