Pentagon to replace Anthropic AI tools after risk label

The Pentagon is moving to replace Anthropic PBC’s AI tools after the company was declared a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration, a senior defense official said.

Anthropic PBC is a US AI company that builds large language models and had been the only provider cleared to operate in the Pentagon’s classified cloud.

Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon’s chief digital and AI officer, said engineering work has begun to pursue multiple alternative large language models into the appropriate government-owned environments and that the department expects to have them available for operational use very soon.

Other vendors, including OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, have won approval to perform classified work, and Google is rolling out its Gemini agents on unclassified networks before moving into classified work, but officials say it is unclear how quickly those models can be integrated into existing programs.

Anthropic sued to block the supply-chain designation, saying in court filings it violates its rights to free speech and due process, while Emil Michael, the Pentagon’s under secretary for research and engineering, said there was little chance talks would be revived.
