Pentagon awards Scale AI $500m military contract
The Pentagon has awarded Scale AI a US$500 million contract to help sort data and support military decisions as the US expands its use of AI.
The deal is five times larger than Scale AI’s US$100 million Pentagon contract from September 2025.
The company is also involved in other US military AI programs.
The award follows a January 2026 memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth calling for wider AI adoption.
The Pentagon also signed AI agreements with Nvidia, Microsoft, Reflection AI, and Amazon for classified military networks.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Pentagon has made broader AI use a top-level priority
- The US$500 million award to Scale AI follows a recent policy shift inside the US Department of Defense, the agency that oversees the military, to widen the use of AI.
- The size of the contract gives that order real weight and urgency.
The Pentagon is leaning on a small group of AI suppliers
- The agreement marks a change in military buying, giving specialized data firms like Meta-backed Scale AI a larger role as defense partners while the US expands AI use.
- With the contract value rising fivefold, the Pentagon is relying more on commercial vendors focused on data and AI services, alongside traditional defense technology purchases.
- That path could leave national security AI work in the hands of a small set of Silicon Valley companies, which may reshape the place of traditional defense contractors in future digital warfare.
