Peak XV, YC sell part of Groww stake in block deal
India-based stockbroking platform Groww said early backers Peak XV Ribbit Capital and Y Combinator sold 30.91 crore shares or 5.01% equity on May 12 after its IPO lock-in expired.
The block deal valued at about 53.7 billion rupees (US$565 million).
The floor price was 182.3 rupees (US$1.9) a share, and Groww stock was down 4.3% at 185.28 rupees (US$2) in early trade.
Groww listed in November at 100 rupees (US$1.1) a share in India’s second-largest fintech IPO.
The selling shareholders now face a 90-day lock-up after the transaction.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The recent share sale covered only a slice of the unlocked stock
- The 53.7 billion rupees (US$565 million) block deal drew attention, yet it covered only a small share of the Groww stock that had just become eligible for sale.
- On May 12, the lock-in ended for about 400 crore shares worth nearly 800 billion rupees (US$8.42 billion), equal to 65% of pre-IPO holdings 1.
- Early foreign backers drove most of that unlock. Venture capital and private equity firms owned nearly 58% of Groww as of March 31, 2026 1.
- Those holders gained a chance to cash out after Groww’s market value almost doubled from its IPO level, which opened the door to large gains on early bets 1.
The exit lifts venture returns and puts focus on Groww’s next phase
- The sale gives public proof that startup investors can book returns in Indian markets, including Peak XV, YC Holdings and Ribbit Capital 1.
- The transaction may also lift confidence in India’s startup market among overseas investors.
- Attention now turns to whether Groww can hold up as a listed company once the early growth story cools.
- Its brokerage business remains tied to market swings. Curbs on derivatives trading also hurt recent results, and the company said they led to a sequential revenue drop in Q1 FY26, or the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 2.
- Further expansion rests on adding new businesses through its “super app” plan, including lending and wealth management 3.
