Peak XV Partners leads $21m series A for AI healthcare firm Arintra

Arintra has raised US$21 million in a series A funding round led by Peak XV Partners, with participation from Endeavor Health Ventures, Y Combinator, Counterpart Ventures, Spider Capital, Ten13, and others.

The company provides a platform that uses AI to automate medical coding for healthcare providers.

Arintra plans to use the new capital to accelerate product development, grow its team, and open a new headquarters in the Bay Area.

The company said its platform integrates with electronic health records and aims to help healthcare organizations secure accurate and compliant reimbursements while reducing manual work.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Medical coding complexity has exploded, creating urgent need for automation

The medical coding system has grown exponentially more complex over decades, creating the business case for companies like Arintra.

When the first disease classification system was proposed in 1763, it contained just 2,400 unique diseases across 10 categories1.

Today’s ICD-10 system contains approximately 155,000 codes compared to just 17,000 in the previous ICD-9 system1.

This represents a 9x increase in coding complexity that human coders must navigate, while healthcare organizations face mounting financial pressures.

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) system has similarly expanded since its 1966 launch, evolving from simple 4-digit codes to today’s complex 5-digit system with thousands of procedure codes2.

This complexity explains why Arintra’s customers like Mercyhealth achieved a 32% reduction in coding costs and 43% fewer denials. The sheer volume and intricacy of modern medical coding make human-only approaches increasingly unsustainable.

2️⃣ Autonomous coding represents the natural evolution beyond computer-assisted systems

Arintra’s approach fits into a clear technological progression that the healthcare industry has been following.

Traditional Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) systems still require human coders to validate and approve suggested codes, creating bottlenecks in the revenue cycle3.
